Chinese manufacturers have crossed the energy density threshold that European battery startups have long positioned as their future competitive moat — and they're doing it at production scale, not in a lab. While Northvolt collapsed under $9 billion in funding, China's battery giants are scheduling vehicle integrations for 2026 and 2027. European founders and investors need to understand what that gap actually means before it closes the window entirely.

What happened in China Over the past several months, China's battery industry has moved the solid-state conversation from roadmap to reality with a speed that should unsettle anyone still treating the technology as a medium-term bet. Chery Automobile announced at its 'Battery Night' event that its all-solid-state battery achieves an energy density of 600 Wh/kg and a range of over 1,500 km (932 miles) under CLTC conditions. More importantly, this isn't a laboratory number: Chery's 'Rhino S all-solid-state battery module' entered limited vehicle production in 2026, following a January 2026 announcement. Chery also confirmed that its Rhino E liquid semi-solid-state battery can add 500 km (310 miles) of range in 8 minutes with up to 1,200 kW of charging power — a figure that reframes what fast charging means in practice.
